Wilder, VT - Winston W. Whitten, 90, died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at his home.

He was born October 1, 1922 in Lincoln, ME, a son of Albert I and Helen (Clapp) Whitten. He grew up in Lincoln and graduated in 1940 from the Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln. Winston then moved to Lynn, MA for a short time joining the US Navy in 1942. He served his country during WWII and was a crew member of the USS Mississinewa when it was torpedoed on November 20, 1944, this was the only ship sunk by the Japanese kamikaze submarine. He was married to Helen Scherer in 1946 they started a family together, she died unexpectedly in 1951. He was remarried in 1952 to Flora Abel. Winston went onto further his military career in the US Air Force where he served in Korea during the Korean War retiring in 1966. He moved to Vergennes to work for Symons Precision which later became BF Goodrich as a systems analyst retiring in 1984. Flora died in 2002.

Winston was a Past Commander of the Vergennes, American Legion Post #14. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting. He was an accomplished high school athlete and set a record 440yd dash that stood for over twenty years.

He is also predeceased by a brother Harvard Whitten.

He is survived by three sons Bill Whitten of Claremont, NH, Thomas Whitten of Peabody, MA, Theodore Whitten of Fairfax, VT, eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Saturday, May 25, from 4-5PM at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT with funeral services to immediately follow at 5PM at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date in Lincoln, ME.
