Windsor, VT – Wilmer R. Maxham, 84, died Friday at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

He was born January 13, 1935 in Hanover, NH a son of Ralph and Hazel (Harris) Maxham.  Wilmer grew up on the family farm in Quechee where he attended grammar school.  He then graduated from Hartford High School class of 1953 before going to Cornell University where he earned a bachelors degree in 1958.  After college Wilmer began his career with the US Census Bureau in Washington, D.C.  He was married to Carol May Balocca in Annapolis, MD in 1970.  They made their home in Shady Side, MD and later in Annapolis before returning to the farm in Quechee in 1976. Together they operated Maxham's Quechee Valley Shoppe on Route 4 until 1983.  Wilmer then sold real estate for a time and later went to work as the supply manager for Rock Resorts in Woodstock until retiring.

Wilmer enjoyed gardening and had large gardens each summer when his health allowed.  He also took many memorable trips with Carol including sailing through the Panama Canal and taking the Trans Canadian Railroad from the West Coast back to Quebec.   Wilmer was active in the Hartford Elks Lodge, holding several offices including Exalted Ruler and attended several state and national conventions with Carol.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Windsor; son Mark Maxham of Encino, CA and grandsons Charles and Carter Maxham of Raleigh, NC as well as many cousins.

A committal service is planned for the spring.
