William J. "Bill" Tansey, 83, a longtime resident of Windsor, passed away Thursday evening, March 8 at his apartment at the Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community in Windsor.
He was born December 1, 1934 in Miami, FL the son of John J. Tansey of Lenox, MA and Mary A. (Cafferkey) Tansey of Roscommon, Ireland. Following the death of his mother, Bill, still a toddler, moved to Lee, MA where he was raised by his maternal aunt and uncle, Catherine "Kitty" and Bill Tyer. He received his schooling in Lee and graduated from Lee High School in 1953. Shortly after his graduation he joined the US Marine Corps serving three years. Following his honorable discharge he moved to Windsor, VT where he was employed by the Perini Corporation to work on flood control projects and the new interstate highway system. While in Windsor, he met Gloria Mae Husband and they were married on June 11, 1960. Bill continued to work with construction companies until he retired from Miller Construction of Windsor, VT where he worked as a construction estimator.
Bill and Gloria loved to hunt and fish and spent many years together pursuing these past times with their children, grandchildren and many friends. Gloria, his loving wife of forty seven years, passed away on February 28, 2007. Bill also enjoyed gardening, horseshoes, and sports. He was fond of attending and supporting Windsor High School athletic events and was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and American Legion Post #25. Bill was very proud of his Irish heritage and felt very fortunate to have visited his mother's hometown in Ireland with his daughter, Maureen in 2009.
He was also predeceased by his parents, aunt and uncle, brothers, John, Gerald, George and Robert Tansey and cousins William Tyer, Thomas Tyre, and Donald Tyer whom he considered brothers.
Survivors include one daughter, Maureen Tansey and her husband, David Peckinpaugh of Hartland, VT, four sons, Patrick W. Tansey of Hartland, John G. Tansey and his wife, Nida of Windsor, Michael J. Tansey and his wife, Leslie of Grovetown, GA and Joseph E. Tansey of Burlington, VT, eight grandchildren, Jose Lester, Leah, Shane, Ryan, Emily, Ryleigh, Alexina and Sam, three great grandchildren, Madison, Cole and Hadley and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 6 PM - 8 PM, Friday, March 16 at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM, Saturday, March 17 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor. Rev. Charles R. Danielson will be the Celebrant. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church hall. Committal services with military honors will be held in the spring at the St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the dedicated staff at the Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community, Bayada Hospice, TLC Nursing and Home Care and Mt. Ascutney Hospital for the loving and supportive care they extended to Bill.
