Obituary

Dr. William Andrew Barr, Jr. passed away peacefully at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care on January 20, 2021.

Bill was born on October 2, 1926, in Buffalo, New York, the son of Dr. William A. Barr, Sr. and Margaret Gallagher Barr. He grew up in Buffalo, graduated from Canisius High School and earned his BS, MS and DDS at the University of Buffalo. He served in the Navy at the end of WWII.

When Bill was 16, he met his lovely wife June Mary Allden at a high school dance. They married on October 22, 1949, raised seven children and spent 71 years together. In 1963, Bill relocated his family to Hanover, NH and said it was one of the best decisions he ever made. He thought Hanover was an incredible place to live and raise children. His family thrived in the Hanover Schools and all the sports and arts programs Hanover and Dartmouth College had to offer.

Bill first worked at the White River Junction VA Medical Center before starting a private dental practice in Hanover. He was also a dental staff member at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and an Adjunct Professor at Dartmouth Medical School. Bill was a member of the NH Dental Society. After 35 years, Bill retired from his practice in 1998, but continued to work until his early eighties in clinics to help underserved communities.

Bill was drawn to mountains and lakes. He was an avid skier, sailor and water skier--sports he taught all his children. In the mid-'60s, Bill loved nothing more than to pack his seven kids into the family wagon and head to Sugarbush to watch Stein Eriksen do his flip on skis and hopefully ski behind Stein down the mountain. He also traveled to countless ski races documenting his children's runs on his 8mm movie camera. More recently, Bill enjoyed meeting up with dear friends to ski together at the Dartmouth Skiway and to wrap up the day with some après-ski cheer.

For 35 summers, Bill vacationed with his family on beautiful Squam Lake. The winds on Squam were unpredictable so he brought The New York Times along in his sailboat to wait out the lulls. He spent endless hours driving his kids water skiing and he amazed his entire family by water skiing into his late eighties.

As a child, Bill had fond memories of spending time out of the city with his relatives, the Gallaghers, who operated dairy farms in upstate New York. His cousins and uncle introduced him to flying over their farm fields. Bill later earned his private pilot's license and never lost his love of airplanes and flying.

Bill's real passion and talent was music, especially the piano. He was a natural musician with an incredible ear. He could play anything he heard without reading music, particularly Boogie Woogie. Bill's influences were Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Bert Kaempfert. He also enjoyed playing the drums while listening to Swing, and delighted his family on his 90 th birthday when he sat in with the Maple Leaf Seven to play some Dixieland on piano and drums.

Bill was a dedicated and caring father and grandfather who was always there to help, but he will be remembered even more for the fun and adventure he provided his family. He is survived by his wife June Allden Barr, and his children: Margaret Pyle (Thomas) of Madison, WI; Kathleen Allden of Lyme, NH; William Barr, III (Kate Soule) of Etna, NH; Patrick Barr (Diane McGrory) of Wellesley, MA; Colleen Barr (Paul Bozuwa) of Norwich, VT;  Mary Barr of Hartford, VT;  John Barr (Marion Hylan) of Hallowell, ME; and cousin Marga Cate of Hartford, VT.  'Gramps' is also survived by 17 adoring grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

On Friday, January 22, a Catholic Mass and funeral was held at St. Denis in Hanover, NH for family.  Bill was a longtime parishioner of St. Denis, and taught Sunday school when his children were young. The Knight Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Red Logan Dental Clinic, 70 N.
