Obituary

Walter K McEnaney died at his home with family at his side on April 21, 2012. Walter was the son of Peter and Carolyn McClure McEnaney, born in New York City on August 26, 1922.

In 1938, they moved to Freeport, NY where he finished high school and graduated from New York University, with a degree in Industrial Arts, after World War II interrupted his education.

Walter served in the Army Corps of Engineers and participated in the landing on the beach in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge ,and went on to the Philippine Islands. When Japan surrendered, he returned home. Walter remained active in the Army Reserve for a total of 23 years including active duty.

In September1948, he met Dorothy Dana while they were both employed as teachers. They were married in August 1949, and their daughter, Carolyn, was born in May 1950. Their son, Bruce, was born in December 1951.

Walter worked as a teacher, with a few years spent as a Safety Engineer for the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Insurance Co, returning to teaching until his retirement in 1977.

He "moonlighted" on occasion as a paperhanger, carpenter and teaching adult education classes at Wantagh High School. He built a small garage at their first property in Wantagh NY, went on to build a house at their vacation place in South Reading, VT.

In 1977, Walter and Dorothy retired to their home in Windsor, Vermont where he designed and built a large garage and kitchen. He also built a pool house on that property.

He has been a member of the Windsor American Legion-Post 25 since 1970, serving as Adjutant for several years. He was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks.

Walter enjoyed being a part of the community of Windsor, and of the Sate of Vermont; and hosted many parties throughout the years at his home on Clough Ave, but most of all, the family occasions that have built continuity from generation to generation brought him joy.

Walter is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 62 years; his daughter, Carolyn and her husband Bruce Van Tassell; his son, Bruce and his wife Betty; his grandchildren, Timothy and Scott and wife Erin; his great grandchildren, Eli and Dana McEnaney; and his loyal caregiver, Noi Rice.

At Walter's request, there will be no services, and burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Walter's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.
