THETFORD VT- Walter P. Luikart MD, died Friday, January 28 at his home in Thetford
He was born July 3, 1926 in New York City, the son of Ernst and Emmy Luikart. He grew up and attended school in the Bronx. He graduated from the Bronx Science School, and completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia University before completing his education at the Albany Medical School. Walter served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the USS Fargo, where he worked with electronics and radios.
He practiced as a Psychiatrist in Manhattan while living in Leona, NJ with his wife of more than 50 years, Joan Schlit. In 1993 he retired from medicine and moved to Thetford, VT.
Walter enjoyed classical music, whether listening, collecting, or studying it in his Bach study group, where he translated cantatas from German. He also enjoyed natural history, going on camping adventures with his family, and acting.
He was a member of several local Thespian groups and the Hemlock Society.
Walter is predeceased by his wife Joan.
He is survived by two sons Paul Luikart of Easthampton, MA and Ernest Luikart of Poultney, VT, three granddaughters and a brother, Wilholm Luikart of Northern CA.
There will be no services. The Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. assisted with arrangements.
