IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vivian Helen
Derrick
September 8, 1922 – December 11, 2019
Vivian Derrick, 97, passed away on December 11, 2019, at Cedar Hill Continuing Care after a period of declining health. She was born on September 8, 1922, in White River Jct., to Clinton and Helen (Bourk) Hackett. She grew up in White River and St. Albans. Skipping sixth grade, she graduated from Hartford High School at age 16 with the Class of 1939. Three weeks later, she started working for Sherman Manning, where she met her future husband, Asa M. Derrick.
Vivian and Asa were married in Columbia, SC, on April 4, 1943. As part of a telephone tree during WWII, Vivian spent Sunday afternoons in the upstairs of the old fire station in White River, hoping that the phone wouldn't ring. Upon Asa's return from active duty, Vivian and Asa settled In Wilder, where they raised three children. Once the children were in school, Vivian worked at Shopping International in Norwich until she retired in 1982.
Time spent with family, trips to the coast of Maine, walks in the woods of Vermont, snowmobiling, her poodles, holidays (especially Christmas), shopping, and good books were among her favorite things. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and DAR.
Vivian is survived by her children: son, David (Patricia) of Wilder; daughters, Kathleen (Thomas Lochhaas) of Newburyport, MA, and Susan (David Laurin) of White River; grandchildren: Jenna (David) Wheeler, Jacqueline (Brian) Henry, Scott (Jenna) Laurin, Elizabeth Laurin, Cassandra Lochhaas; great-grandchildren: Derrick Wheeler, Ashleigh Wheeler, Asa Henry, Gracyn Henry, Everett Laurin, and Reagan Laurin; step-sisters: Elaine Cilley and Georgia Bean; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband; her father and step-mother, Clinton and Ruby Hackett; mother and step-father, Helen and Bradley Sartwell; brothers, Clinton and Perley Hackett; step-sister Jeannie Sartwell Gorton; and her widowhood companion, Frank Perron.
The family extends deep gratitude to the staff members of Historic Homes of Runnemede and Cedar Hill for the outstanding care that Vivian received during the last years of her life.
At Vivian's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral. A graveside committal service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Church, 106 Gates Street, White River Jct., VT, or to Poodle Rescue of New England, PO Box 441447, Somerville, MA 02144-0012
