Violet M. "Vi" Mayo, 83, a longtime resident of Windsor passed away Monday morning, October 13 at Lebanon Genesis Healthcare in Lebanon.
She was born July 14, 1931 in West Windsor the daughter of Perley and Mary (Garcia) Root. She received her schooling in Claremont and graduated from Stevens High School in 1948. She married George E. Mayo in Claremont on November 16, 1952. They moved to Windsor in 1952. Mrs. Mayo enjoyed cooking and baking, especially pies and cakes.
She was a longtime active member of the American Legion Post #25 Auxiliary and a member of the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church in Windsor. She was a former den mother with the Windsor Cub Scouts. She also volunteered at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital Gift Shop in Windsor and at the Veterans Administration Medical center in White River Jct. Vi was fond of playing Bingo, dancing and doing the polka, roller-skating, gardening, and attending Windsor sporting events.
She also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Her husband of thirty seven years, George Mayo passed away on December 16, 1989. She was also predeceased by her parents, three sisters, Ruth Colby, Velma Moreno and Rosie Reola, and by one brother, John Root.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Mayo of Biddeford, ME, five sons, Stanley Mayo of Windsor, John Mayo and his wife Donna of Brownsville, VT, Bruce Mayo and his wife Cathy of Hardwick, VT, David Mayo his wife Brenda of Cornish, NH and Stephen Mayo and his wife Michele of Derry, NH, six grandchildren, Tyler Mayo, Hunter Mayo, Reid Mayo, Nate Mayo, Mindi Mayo and Alex Mayo, several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 18 at 10:00 AM in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor. The Rev. Earl Dionne, Pastor of the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church in Windsor will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate at 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, VT 05495.
The Knight Funeral Home in Windsor is entrusted with the arrangements.
