HARTLAND, VT
Viola H. Durphey, 89, a lifelong resident of Hartland, passed away Thursday morning, June 16 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor.
She was born August 14, 1921 in Hartland the daughter of Raymond S. and Hazel (Barbour) Howe. She received her schooling in Hartland and Windsor, graduating from Windsor High School in 1939. She worked as a hairdresser in Lebanon for a short while. She married Carroll R. Durphey in Hartland on August 18, 1940. Mrs. Durphey served as Hartland Town Auditor for many years and was later employed as a bookkeeper for Precision Cutter Grinding also in Hartland.
She was a longtime member of the Hartland First Congregational Church, a member and officer of the Hartland PTA, and a 4-H Leader for many years. She enjoyed bookkeeping, knitting, crocheting and camping. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family.
Mr. Durphey passed away July 28, 1988. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Raymond S. Howe, Jr. and Leo Howe.
Survivors include one daughter, Donna L. Barber of Hartland, one son, Raymond C. Durphey of Hartland, two brothers, Paul G. Howe and Avery L. Howe, both of Hartland, one sister, Laura Noel of Perkinsville, VT, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor on Sunday evening, June 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 20 at 11:00 AM at the First Congregational Church in Hartland with the Rev. Lucia Jackson, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartland Village Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow at the church hall.
