Obituary

Wilder, VT - Velma H. Blodgett, 79, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday November 12, 2024, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

She was born on September 19, 1945, one of set of twins to Raymond and Gertude (Pulling) Hanfield of East Pittsford, VT.  Velma attended schools in the lower Champlain Valley and graduated from Otter Valley Union High School in 1963. Immediately following her graduation, she began working at the Ayrshire Office in Brandon and later at Standard Register in Middlebury. She married Richard Blodgett of Hartland in 1967, and they made their home in Hartland until moving to Wilder in 1972 where they raised their two daughters Debra and Diane.  She opened Velma's Day Care at her home in 1979 so she could remain at home with her girls. Caring for area children for 32 years brought much joy to her life.

Velma was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and watching them play and following their stats brought her much joy. She also enjoyed playing cards, snowmobiling, seeing her "grand dog" Spike but most of all being with her family, especially her grandson Carson.

Velma was predeceased by her brothers, Francis and Lewis Hanfield; sisters Martha and Sudona Hanfield, Pauline Emmons and her twin sister, Thelma Savela.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard Blodgett, daughters Debra Blodgett and Diane Blodgett all of Wilder, a grandson Carson Wiltse of Watertown, NY; sisters Gladys Rickets of Rutland and Edna Kerr of Topsham; brothers Donald Hanfield of Shoreham, Russell Hanfield of Rutland and William Hanfield of Brandon, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.  In addition to her family Velma was especially close to Kathy (Kip) Gaudette, Bianca Severance, and Wendy Manning.

A visitation will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., Tuesday, November 19th from 4-6PM with a funeral service to follow at 6PM. Burial will be in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery at the convenience of the family. A Celebration of life will be announced when the weather allows in the spring.
