West Lebanon, NH- Vaughn "Red" Allen Tompkins, Jr., 91, died Thursday, April 15, 2021 at his home following a decline in health.
Red was born November 27, 1929 in Somerville, MA, a son of Vaughn and Violet (Simmons) Tompkins. He graduated from Medford High and Technical School. He married Margaret Wilson on January 27, 1951 in Tewksbury, MA, where they made their home for 68 years. Red worked as a Hand Typesetter for newspapers in the Boston area and later as an Offset Printer Operator for the Courier Citizen in Lowell, MA. Red left printing and worked briefly as a custodian at Tewksbury Memorial High School before he earned his teaching certificate and became a carpentry teacher at the Massachusetts Correctional Institute in Concord, MA. Red and Margaret moved to West Lebanon in 2017 to be closer to their children. Red loved hunting, fishing and building toys for his grandchildren. He was a lifetime member of the Pelham Rod and Gun Club in Pelham, NH. He was an active union member wherever he worked in the printing trade.
Red is predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret Tompkins.
He is survived by his daughter Margaret DiBella (Al) of West Windsor, VT and son Robert Tompkins (Judi) of Pittsford, VT, grandchildren Kenneth Tompkins (Lowansa), Collin Tompkins (Sara), Sarah Gurr (Michael), Katherine Blackman (Colton), great grandsons Charlie, Vaughn, and Liam and his sister Lois Stevens of Maine.
Interment will be held in the Tewksbury Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Knight Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
