Thomas Glenn Pitts, devoted husband and father, died on July 16, 2022. He was born on January 8, 1946 in Olean, NY, the son of Glenn and Catherine O'Donnell Pitts. Tom grew up in Olean, graduating from Olean High School in 1964, and from St. Bonaventure University in 1968 with a BS degree in Physics. In 1973, Tom earned a Master of Science in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.
On June 15, 1968, 12 days after their graduations from separate colleges, Tom married Paula M. Blood at Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Jamestown, NY. One week later, they settled in Rome, NY and began 54 years of married life and adventure. Tom was involved with his children in all their activities, assisting with Little League baseball, coaching soccer, working with Boy Scouts, and attending many a dance recital. He and the family spent several years boating on Lake Delta in Rome, NY and camping in the Adirondack Mountains. He enjoyed vacation trips to Captiva Island, FL and Kennebunkport, ME. Business travel took him from coast to coast in the United States, and to Japan, Germany, England, and Scotland. Retirement in Quechee, VT involved plenty of activity at the Quechee Club, including summer golf.
Tom began his professional career in June of 1968 as a Physicist in Radar and Space Surveillance at Rome Air Development Center on Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY. After 19 years with the US Government, he took a position at ITEK Industries in Lexington, MA in 1987. In 1996, he began his position at Hughes Technology in Danbury, CT. He retired in 2004 from Goodrich Industries in Danbury, at which time he and Paula moved to Quechee, VT.
In his first year of retirement, Tom taught 2 semesters of General Science in Claremont, NH at River Valley Community College. In 2005, he was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Riverside Research in New York City. In 2010, he was elected Chairman of the Board serving for 7 years until retirement in 2017.
Tom was an active member of the Quechee Club in Quechee, VT, serving on that Board of Trustees, and as Treasurer.
Tom is survived by his wife, Paula; his children, Matthew of Quechee, VT, Jonathan (Deb) of Westford, MA, and Claire (Jerome) Monachino of Underhill, VT. He also leaves grandchildren, Olivia and Dominic Monachino, and Abigail and Aidan Rosenthal-Pitts. He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Terrence.
Services will be at St. Anthony's Church in White River Junction, VT at 10am on Friday, August 5 th , 2022, with a gathering to follow at The Quechee Club.
