Obituary

Thomas Marll McDonald, 82, of White River Junction, VT died peacefully on January 24, 2025 at the Jack Byrne Center in Lebanon, NH.  He preferred to be called by his unique middle name, Marll, which was a portmanteau of his parents' names, Mariam (Siegfried) and T. Hill McDonald.

Marll grew up in Poland, OH, graduating from Poland Seminary High School, earning his Bachelor's degree at the College of Wooster, and Master's at Ohio State University.  A firm believer in education, he taught high school science for a year in Chicago then taught math at Dean College, enabling his move to Framingham, Massachusetts where he met then married the love of his life, Alice Dalrymple and started their family.  They married in the Chapel on Squirrel Island, Maine and spent time with their family every summer there for more than 50 years. While working at Dean College he wrote a math book that was published by Houghton Mifflin.

In 1979, while struggling with his college employer's first computer, he contacted the manufacturer about their technical documentation. He then pivoted that conversation into himself working for Data General followed by Digital Equipment Corporation as a software technical writer.  After retiring in 2001, he volunteered for 17 more years in the Hartford, Vermont school system helping students with math.

He was a lifelong Presbyterian and Ford man.  His hobbies included restoring a 1940 Ford from the ground up and being a nationwide go-to man for rebuilding their quirky distributor systems.  He was a 50-year member of the New England Early Ford V8 club.  In 1982 he computerized and maintained his church's financial records using an early home computer system and software he wrote himself.  He served as the assistant treasurer for both the Presbyterian Church of Sudbury, MA and Sharon Congregational Church in Sharon, VT.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Frederick. Besides his wife of 52 years, Alice, he leaves behind his two children, Jeffrey Thomas McDonald (Katherine), Elizabeth "Lisa" McDonald Qualmann (Lance), five grandsons (Rowan Patrick McDonald, Chase Alexander McDonald, Will Edwin Qualmann, Levi Thomas Qualmann, and Jude Immanuel Qualmann), his brother Richard (Rick), brother-in-law Clark Dalrymple (Cynthia), and nieces and nephews.
