Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War and stationed in the tropics. In late 1960, while he was stationed in Kansas, he met a young nurse at one of the military sponsored dances held in the NCO Club at Richards-Gabor Air Force Base. They shared a dance and a short two months later, on February 21 st 1961, he and Judith Conner were married. They moved to Vermont and purchased their home on Nutt Lane in White River Junction. Tom took work at Split Ball Bearing (now Timken Aerospace) in Lebanon, NH while Judith stayed home to raise their two daughters. Tom's career lasted forty-two years and he retired as one Timken's top International Account Representatives.

Tom was an avid outdoorsman. He loved sharing his outdoor skills with his daughters. They have fond memories of rock climbing, fishing, and playing golf. His complete comfort in the woods along with his outstanding tracking skills, enabled Tom to take part in many search and rescue and missing persons events throughout New England.

He was a member of Praise Chapel of Hartford Village, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Hartford Elks Lodge in White River Jct., VT. He served these organizations as Exalted Ruler of the Elks and as the State Financial Officer for the American Legion.
