Obituary

Thomas Blake Day, Sr. passed away unexpectedly on May 24, 2023, surrounded by family and friends at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.  He was born July 9, 1937, in Mt Vernon, NY, third son of Robert B and Beatrice Keeney Day.

Tom graduated from the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor Ct in 1955. He graduated in 1960 from the Cornell School of Hotel Administration. At Cornell he dated his future wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Hathaway Dunbar. Tom started his career working for the family catering business, Robert Day Deans, when he was a young teen, and his first job out of college was as the manager of the restaurants in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City which was operated by the family catering company.

Tom had an entrepreneurial spirit. In 1972, while living in Katonah, NY, he would partner with two Dartmouth undergrads who felt the Upper Valley needed a real Rock 'n Roll venue.  "Eleazar's" was born in White River Jct. and would become somewhat infamous and most would say a good time. He was the big guy at the door keeping order. Tom had visited his Dartmouth friends frequently while at Cornell back in the 50's and loved the area. He and his family traded the city for the mountains that year.

Eleazar's would continue without him in some form or another. In 1975 Tom would move on and partner with some others to revive a foundering swimming pool business. Northeast Pools and Spas custom built residential pools as well as pools for many of the major ski resorts and hotels throughout northern New England. The business thrived through his retirement in in 2002 and still operates under ownership of one of the partners. After retiring from the pool business, he remained busy running several rental properties.

Shortly after they married in August of 1959, Tom and his wife Beth discovered Hulett's Landing on Lake George in NYS by responding to an ad for a cottage near the Lake.  They not only discovered a beautiful location on the Lake but also a wonderful family compound of great people with similar interests in the fun activities he so enjoyed. He and his brothers and families shared the use of a great old cottage on Meadow Point.  He always had a motorboat and spent hours pulling his children and their friends around on water skis. Swimming, boating, tennis and then golf.  He was enthralled and hasn't missed returning there at least once a year since his first summer in 1962, over 60 years ago.

He had a deep respect for the military. Both his father and big brother served in Europe; his father during World War One and his brother during the second World War.  He was a voracious reader of military history. His grandfather instilled in him a love of history and particularly the history of the Civil War.  His most memorable Civil War trips were with tours led by well-known historian Ed Bearss.  Some of Tom's interests had been reinforced by his active participation in the Boy Scouts as a scout and as a leader.  His favorite charity is The Wounded Warrior Project.

Tom was a master storyteller with a mischievous sense of humor. In the summer he loved boating on Lake George, and snowmobiling in the winter. He golfed well into his eighties and really enjoyed working with his hands, whether it was building something or just doing yard work. He will be remembered for his leadership, loyalty and generosity.

Tom was predeceased by his brothers: Robert K. Day and Richard H. Day. He is survived by his wife, Beth Day, 3 children: Thomas Day Jr., Cynthia Day, Linda Day Colgan (Mark Colgan), 3 grandchildren:  Marco Day (Mariel Day), Jack Colgan, Drew Colgan, 2 great grandchildren: Ryder Day, Hadley Day, and 6 nieces and nephews: Bob Day, Barbara Holmes, Carol Brockunier, David Day, Susan Brown, and Priscilla Day.

A service will be held at 11am on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at the First Universalist Society of Hartland, VT, 8 Brownsville Road, Hartland Four Corners, Vermont 05049.
