Hartland, VT – Terence Varley, 75, died on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care in Lebanon, NH. Terry was born on January 11, 1949, in Brentford, England to parents Harry and Renee (Fishlock) Varley. The young family came to the United States for a sense of safety in the wake of WWII and settled in Connecticut. Terry was a natural athlete with a quick mind who excelled at almost every endeavor. He was a skilled soccer, basketball, and tennis player and pursued basketball during college at Iowa State where he suffered a debilitating injury which ended his college career. He was hospitalized for over a year and moved back home to Connecticut. After his recovery he began working with Robert Stetson, the two became close friends and it was through Robert that he came to know Robert's daughter Jeannette. As Terry looked out for Jeannette at the local bar, the two became close and married in 1982. They moved to Vermont shortly after and settled in the Hartland area. The two loved dancing together, watching the wildlife, and living with their pets. Terry enjoyed creating and tending vast flower gardens around the house, coaching soccer, catch and release fishing, and delighted in almost daily practical jokes. Then years later than they expected, and after being told that they would never be able to have children, Shelby was born three months pre-mature. Their family was complete, and Terry had someone who delighted in his jokes and sense of humor as much as he did. He enjoyed teaching Shelby to play chess and sports.

Terry is survived by his wife Jeannette Varley and daughter Shelby May-Renee Varley of Hartland; his sister Celia Urbano and husband Bob of Florida; two brothers-in-law Christopher Stetson and partner Brandy, and Robert Stetson and wife Christine, all of Connecticut; the family Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Daisy and cat Jasmine; nieces and nephews, family in England, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law Robert and Dorothy Stetson, and family pets Shandy (his childhood dog), Wabbit (rabbit), Brittany (dog), Ruby (dog), Red (rooster), and another beloved dog later in life also named Shandy.

A service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at Knight Funeral Home, Windsor, VT. Memorial donations are appreciated to Therapy Dogs of Vermont.
