T. Walley Williams

Hanover, NH – T. Walley Williams III, 94, passed peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Friday, August 7, 2026, with his children by his side.

Walley was born November 28, 1931, in Orange, NJ, a son of H.G. Carey Williams and Margaret (Ramsburg) Williams. He graduated from Kent Preparatory School in Kent, CT, in 1949 and continued his education at the University of Virginia, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and earned a bachelor’s degree, Summa cum laude. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and upon his honorable discharge, earned a master’s degree in physics from Columbia University.

Walley lived a long, productive and fulfilling life, filled with work that gave him satisfaction and stimulation, and made the world a better place. He was an engineer and an inventor. He developed a physics teaching tool that was later turned into air hockey. The prototype was very popular with the neighborhood kids! He also worked for years, first with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and later Liberating Technologies until about 10 years ago, in designing parts for prosthetics that allowed people with upper arm amputations or birth conditions to have lightweight, working limbs that moved intuitively.

Walley was an avid outdoorsman and a former President of the Appalachian Mountain Club. He taught his children and grandchildren to love the Earth and to be passionate about saving it from destruction. They spent their childhood in the northern mountains, canoeing the Canadian Maine boundary waters, running white water rivers from Northern New England all the way down to West Virginia and North Carolina, camping and skiing and learning all kinds of interesting skills.

He was also a musician, who was gifted with a beautiful tenor voice. He had a long involvement with the Belmont Music School and the Cantata Singers and other local musical groups in the Boston area.

He married Lynn Flickinger on July 27, 1959, in Detroit, MI. They were inseparable until her death in 1998. They traveled the world together and visited extensively in Latin America and Europe, as well as later trips he made on his own to Japan and Vietnam.

He is survived by his daughter, Judy Anne Williams of Hanover, NH; his son, Carey Heath “Kip” Williams of Montague, MA; grandchildren Hope Leary, Ben Williams, and Lyra Williams; other relatives and friends.

Walley is preceded in death by his wife, Lynn F. Williams; his brother, Carey Heath Williams; and sister, Penelope Gibson Williams.

Donating his body to medical science was very meaningful to Walley, and he would be pleased that he was accepted into the Anatomical Gift Program at the University of Vermont Medical School. As Kip said, "He always wanted to go to medical school, and now he gets to go!"

A service will be held on Saturday, September 5th at 2 pm, at Friends Meeting at Cambridge, 5 Longfellow Park, Cambridge, MA 02138. Reception to follow.
