IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sylvia P.
Ledoux
April 28, 1936 – November 8, 2024
Reading, VT – Sylvia P. Ledoux, a longtime resident of Reading, VT and beloved school bus driver, passed away peacefully at her home on Tyson Road on Friday morning, November 8, 2024, surrounded by her two daughters. She was 36 years to the day from the passing of her husband, Francis, in 1988.
Sylvia was born on April 28, 1936, in St. Albans, VT, to the farming family of Guy and Hazel (Whitney) Westcot of Franklin, VT. She graduated from Franklin High School and soon after married Francis Ledoux on July 27, 1955. The couple first made their home in Springfield, VT, then spent a short time in Claremont, NH, before settling in Reading, where Sylvia lived for over sixty years. Together, they raised two daughters, Deb and Mary.
Sylvia devoted her early years to raising her children, but once they were school-aged, she began a career that would span more than four decades as a school bus driver. With unwavering dedication, Sylvia transported children safely along the winding roads of Reading, earning the admiration and respect of families throughout the community.
Independent and hardworking, Sylvia was known for her self-sufficiency. She took great pride in maintaining her home and property, clearing snow, running the snowblower, and even shoveling the roof—all tasks she did with skill and determination. Inside the house, Sylvia was equally talented, creating beautiful meals, crocheting, knitting, and sewing everything from children's clothes to Barbie outfits, hats, mittens, and countless other handmade treasures.
Sylvia's love of the outdoors was another defining aspect of her life. She enjoyed hunting and fishing, with her home becoming "deer camp" for friends and family during hunting season. Sylvia was an accomplished hunter, often the one to bring home the buck, and she cherished the fishing trips to Canada and local ponds.
In addition to her other activities, Sylvia served the Town of Reading as Assistant Town Clerk for several years.
Sylvia was predeceased by her husband, Francis Ledoux, who passed away in 1988, as well as by two brothers, James Westcot and Richard M. Westcot. She is survived by her daughters, Deb Ledoux of Reading and Mary Vittum and her husband, Gary, of Reading; her granddaughters, Samantha Donald and her husband, Paul, and great grandson Archer, of Bourne, MA, and Brandi Vittum-McLean and her husband, Benjamin, of Reading, VT; a brother, David Westcott and his wife Ann of Massachusetts; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A private graveside service will be held at Felchville Cemetery, where Sylvia will be laid to rest beside her husband. A public celebration of life will take place on Saturday, November 16, at 11:00 AM at the Reading Volunteer Fire Department.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNH Visiting Nurses, 88 Prospect Street, White River Junction, VT 05001 (Ref: Hospice), or to Reading Fire and Rescue, PO Box 42, Reading, VT 05062. Condolences may be left at www.knightfuneralhomes.com.
