Susan K. Williamson passed away peacefully July 11, 2015 at Wheelock Terrace in Hanover, NH surrounded by her family. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and friend. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 3, 1937 to Eugene and Virginia Kettering, she attended Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, OH and Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. In 1958 she married Peter D. Williamson. They lived briefly in Hanover, NH, New York City, NY and Pasadena, California before settling in Greenwich, CT where they raised four children: Debbie, Kyle, Karen, and Doug. In 1991 they moved to Lyme, NH; following Peter's death in 2008, Susan lived in Hanover, NH.
Throughout her life Susan was a generous philanthropist and dedicated volunteer. Her primary focuses were the wellbeing of youth, educational opportunities, and organizations serving the communities in which she lived. Susan worked at a rehabilitation center for children in Stamford, CT and became a strong supporter of David's House in Lebanon, NH, a home for families whose children are being treated for illnesses at the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth. Susan served on various boards, most notably that of Skidmore College where she was a trustee for 39 years. During that time Susan was a member of and led many committees. She also supported athletes through the Williamson Sport Center and established a variety of scholarships. Skidmore honored Susan's time and commitment with an Outstanding Service Award and in 1998 she was awarded an Honorary Degree.
Susan also supported the students and athletes at Dartmouth College and the Geisel School of Medicine in Hanover, NH. She regularly contributed to the Dartmouth Athletic Sponsors that assists student athletes, and she attended many different athletic events, holding season tickets in both football and men's ice hockey. Additionally, Susan created scholarships at the medical school. In October of 2015 Peter and Susan Williamson will be recognized for their commitment to the Upper Valley and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center through the dedication of the Williamson Translational Building on the Lebanon campus.
Susan enjoyed cooking and entertaining, always making sure that her guests were comfortable. She was an avid sports fan as well as an accomplished athlete, playing tennis throughout her life. She also liked skiing in Steamboat Springs, CO and sailing on the Ring Andersen. Mostly though, she loved spending time with family and friends, laughing and reliving good times.
Susan is predeceased by her parents, husband, and brother, Chuck Kettering. She is survived by her sister, Jane Lombard of New York City; her sister-in-law, Jean Pedicord of Denver, CO; her brother-in- law and wife, Ted and Lucy Williamson of St. Augustine, FL; her children and grandchildren: Debbie Williamson of Hanover, NH, Karen and Doug Cushnie of Sherman, CT (Doug and Connor), Kyle and Whitney Kim of Steamboat Springs, CO (Courtney and Morgan Cox), and Doug and Leslie Williamson of Hanover, NH (Peter and Katie), as well as many nieces and nephews.
