IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Susan
Greenberg
July 2, 1950 – October 3, 2022
Hartland, Vermont - Susan Greenberg, 72, died peacefully at her home early Monday morning, October 3, 2022.
She was born July 2, 1950, in Yorkshire, England, studied to be a teacher, and then served with Volunteer Services Overseas, England's version of the Peace Corps. While stationed in Zambia, she met her life partner, Dean Greenberg, who was with the Peace Corp in Tanzania. Following their marriage, they taught in Zambia, Brazil, Peru, Vietnam, New Jersey, and at the Fay School, a private school in Southborough, Massachusetts.
Susan and Dean built their home in Hartland in 1989. Following their retirement in 2005, they made Hartland their permanent residence. They continued to travel and share many adventures including almost a year touring Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Portugal. They made shorter visits to Madagascar, Costa Rica, Mexico, Ecuador, Israel, and Cuba, always including birding activities wherever they were.
Susan was very active in their community. She served on the Hartland Library Board, with the Nature Conservancy, as a volunteer steward of Eshqua Bog, and for many years as the president of the Hartland Nature Club. Less publicly, she was active in the Community Garden.
She was a most gracious hostess and an accomplished cook. Over the years she and Dean opened their home to friends who enjoyed memorable dinner parties, especially those featuring roast beef with all the trimmings.
She is survived by her loving husband Dean, her sister Margaret, brother-in-law Jerry Roberton of England, and nieces and nephews. Her many friends in Hartland and those scattered across the world will treasure the varied memories she helped create, especially their slide programs at the library documenting their far flung birding expeditions.
Condolences to Susan's family may be left at an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com .
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to: Vermont Center for EcoStudies, 20 Palmer Court, White River Junction, VT 05055: The Nature Conservancy of Vermont, 575 Stone Cutters Way, Montpelier, VT 05602; or to the charity of one's choice.
