Stuart L. Richards of Norwich, Vermont, passed away on December 27, 2023 at age 82. He was born and raised in Queens, New York and was a graduate of Stuyvesant high school. After Stuyvesant, he attended Dartmouth College on an academic scholarship where he learned to ski, rowed crew, played rugby, was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and was the first member of his family to graduate from college. After Dartmouth, he worked at several corporate jobs prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. When his service was finished he moved to Vermont where he joined the Mad River Glen and Sugarbush ski patrols and was a rep for the Miller Soft Ski Company. He also began a career in real estate which culminated in him leading developments at Sugarbush and Killington, two of the Northeast's largest ski areas. Upon his retirement in the late 1980's, he devoted his time to his family, skiing, biking and was a founder of Ford Sayer Academy, a high school ski program for aspiring alpine racers. In 2004 he unretired to help his son found the Global Rescue Companies which have become one of the largest global providers of travel risk management, evacuation, security extraction and other critical services. He was active in the business and served as the company's senior vice president until his passing. He also was a forceful advocate for transparent and responsible government, an outspoken voice resisting the wave of illiberalism sweeping the country and involved in several precedent setting legal cases in the state of Vermont. He is survived by his wife Miriam and sons Daniel and Jordan and grandchildren Samantha, Jackson, James, Ava and Bianca. A memorial reception will be held at the Norwich Inn on Saturday, June 22nd, 2024 starting at 3pm.
