PLAINFIELD, NH
Stephen Francis Plummer, Jr., 87, formerly of Plainfield, died peacefully May 16, 2014, at his home in Amherst, MA, with his wife and children by his side. Steve was born in Claremont, NH on April 12, 1927, a son of Stephen, Sr. and Doris Plummer. He attended Kimball Union Academy for high school and later received Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music from Boston University. Steve served in the U.S. Army as Chaplain's assistant from 1945 to 1946. On September 2, 1957, he married Colleen Rollins and was happily married for 57 years.
Steve worked briefly at Kimball Union Academy before starting a long career as professor at Berklee College of Music, in Boston in 1965. There, he taught piano, solfege, harmony, and counterpoint, eventually becoming chair of the Ear Training Department. Living in Natick, MA, during those years, he authored music instruction books, directed choir at the United Methodist Church in Wayland and arranged music for a variety of ensembles. He retired from Berklee in 1992, became an accomplished watercolor artist, and helped bring notable performers to the Natick Center for the Arts. He was always happiest pursuing the arts and visiting with family and children in New England and the western U.S. He is survived by his wife, Colleen, and four children: Stephanie Osman and husband Eric of Amherst, MA, and their daughter Aliya; Mitchell Plummer and wife Catherine of Idaho Falls, ID and their children Sara and Megan; Karen Rennar and husband Hank of Houston, TX; and Brian Plummer and wife Wendy of Amherst, MA and their children Luke, Lindsey and Anna. A funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 21, at 11:00 AM at the Plainfield Community Church in Plainfield, NH, with the Rev. Suellen Leugers, Pastor, officiating. A graveside burial will follow in the Plainfield Cemetery.
