Hanover, NH- Stephen Robert Marion, 76, died on August 5, 2024, at his home in Hanover, NH, following a seven-month battle with a rare lymphoma. He is survived by his wife Nancy of 49 years, their two sons, Jeff Marion of Sudbury, MA, and Patrick Marion (Bonnie) of Wayland, MA, and five grandchildren, Michael, Jack and Matthew, Sylvia and Sam. He is also survived by his sister Cynthia and brothers David, Jeff and Ron.
Steve was born on June 7, 1948, in Bridgeport, CT, and grew up in Louisville, KY, where he enjoyed hiking and camping, became an Eagle Scout, and served as president of the Ohio Valley Federation of Unitarian youth groups. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1970, served two years as a Conscientious Objector at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Philadelphia and L'Hopital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti, and earned a Master's in Health Care Policy in 1974 from Princeton University, where he met his wife Nancy. Steve worked at the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey before moving with Nancy to Hanover in 1976. After working initially for Dartmouth Medical School's Department of Community Medicine, he became Vice President of Regional Planning for Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in 1981. He played a key role in Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center's move from Hanover to Lebanon in 1991. Steve retired in 2008 and continued as a part-time consultant for the Medical Center until 2015.
Steve enjoyed hiking, canoeing, camping, and off-road motorcycle riding. He and his family hiked in many of the national parks. He backpacked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon three times, first with son Jeff, then with both sons and then with Nancy. He also enjoyed kayaking with Nancy on New Hampshire lakes and along the coast of Maine. He and Nancy enjoyed daily bike rides during the summer and frequent bicycle trips in Europe after his retirement. Steve served as a board member or board chair of several Upper Valley not-for-profit organizations, including United Way, Howe Library, Kendal at Hanover, the Hanover Zoning Board and Grafton County Senior Citizens Council.
A memorial service will be held on September 21, 2024 at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, 40 College Street, Hanover. The family requests that memorial contributions in Steve's name be made to the Grafton County Senior Citizens Council.
