Stanley S. "Red" Hinkley, 91, passed away Thursday morning, September 23 at his home in Cornish.
He was born April 14, 1919 in Windsor, Vermont the son of Harland A. and Maybelle (Danforth) Hinkley. He received his schooling in Greenfield, MA and attended the Weathersfield Marsh District. He graduated from Windsor High School in 1937. He married Beverly R. Wood in Windsor on June 19, 1943. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during World War II. He was employed at Bryant's Grinder Machine Tool in Springfield, VT and later at Eastman's Meat Market in Manchester, VT for eighteen years until purchasing the business which he owned and operated for several years until his retirement. They moved to Cornish in 1993. Mr. Hinkley served two terms in the Vermont State Legislature representing Manchester in the 1980's. He also served on the Manchester Selectboard for several years. He was a member of the Adin Iram Lodge F & AM and the Adin Iram Chapter #22 Order of Eastern Star in Manchester, VT. He was also a member of the Vermont Lodge # 18 F & AM in Windsor. Mrs. Hinkley passed away on May 28, 1995.
He was also predeceased by four brothers, Larry Hinkley, Arthur Hinkley, Richard Hinkley and Robert Hinkley, and one sister, Dorothy Treat.
Survivors include one daughter, Joan Broughton of Weathersfield, VT, two sons, Bert Hinkley of Bend, OR and Donald Hinkley of Breen, CO, two sisters, Beverly Thomas of South Royalton, VT and Barbara Green of Ludlow, MA, three brothers, Roger Hinkley of Cornish, NH, George Hinkley of Springfield, VT and Evered Hinkley of Weathersfield, VT, his longtime companion, Marilyn Wood of Cornish, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three step grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor on Friday evening, October 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Masonic service will be offered at 6:00 PM.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 2, at 11:00 AM at the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church in Windsor, with the Rev. Ken White, Pastor and the Rev. Connie Moser, officiating. Committal services will follow in the Ascutneyville Cemetery in Ascutney, VT. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church hall.
