WINDSOR, VT
Shirley Eileen Humphreys Rice, 80, a long time resident of Windsor, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday evening, May 24, surrounded by family after a very long yet graceful struggle with Alzheimers Disease.

She was born February 2, 1935 in Windsor Vermont, the daughter of Allen Royal and Mary Emma (Morse) Humphreys. She attended schools in Cornish and Windsor, graduating Windsor High School in the class of 1954.

After high school, Shirley lived in Burlington, Vermont where she met and married Gerald Jarvis Rice, also of Windsor.

They made their first home together in Hartford, Connecticut, followed by Manchester NH, Goffstown NH, Barre VT,and Newport VT before returning to Windsor in 1968. After retirement they enjoyed traveling and spending many winters in Florida as well as Arizona and summers on Lake Champlain.

Mrs. Rice was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where was was active in the Catholic Daughters and Educational Ministries.

Shirley devoted her life's work to caring for others. Her home, in which she raised their five children (along with many of their friends), was one filled with supporting love and acceptance, providing respite to many.

She led by example , whether teaching a gaggle of Girl Scouts to cook and sew, the neighborhood children to play fair, the assembled crew from hanging wallpaper to chasing wayward cows and showing her family how to handle both the joys and adversities of life with equal tenacity and grace.

Her husband,"Jardy" passed away on September 28, 2014. She was also predeceased by her parents, three brothers, Francis Humphreys, Allen Humphreys and Robert Humphreys and two sisters, Isabell Blaney and Mildred Kenyon.

Survivors included two daughters, Susan Anderson and husband, Kevin of Windsor and Mary Beth Hammond and her husband, Kevin of Hartland, three sons, Michael Rice and his wife, Anong of Windsor, Peter Rice and his wife, Maria of Tuscon Arizona and G. Matthew Rice and his wife, Sarah of Windsor. Grandchildren, Shirley Rice, Peter Rice, Michelle Rice, Bethany LaHaye and her husband Mark, David Rice, WD Scott Hammond, Maria Rice, Erika Anderson, Tyler Hammond, Benjamin Anderson, Emily Anderson and Henry Rice, three great grandchildren, Rory LaHaye, Brayden Hammond and Calvin LaHaye, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Monday evening, June 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. The memorial services will be held Tuesday, June 2 at 11 am at the funeral home. The Rev Susie Webster-Toleno will officiate.
