Randolph Center, VT - Shirley M. Reid, 96, died Sunday, December 10, 2023, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, VT.

Ms. Reid was the daughter of William J. and Pearl (Sproat) Reid. She graduated from William H. Hall High School in West Hartford, CT, earned an associate in science degree at Vermont Junior College, a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Vermont, and a Master of Arts degree at the University of Connecticut. Her career included sales, insurance, business, banking, and college admissions before beginning 34 years in education. She was a teacher and guidance counselor in the K-12 schools of Bennington, VT, a school counselor at Middlebury Union High School and Rutland Senior High School. She then joined the Vermont State Department of Education in Montpelier as the Guidance and Pupil Personnel Services Supervisor from which she retired as the Program Specialist for Guidance, Counseling, Nursing and Psychological Services.
She was a life member of the American Counseling Association, serving on its National Board of Directors; as North Atlantic Regional Chairperson; and as Parliamentarian. Ms. Reid was also a member of several of its professional divisions related to school guidance, counseling, testing, and counselor education. She was active for many years in the New England Conference for Counseling and Development and co-authored and edited two books published by that conference. She was a member of the Vermont Personnel and Guidance Association serving as its president when it was chartered as a branch of the American Counseling Association. She was a member and served on the Board of Directors of the Vermont State School Nurses' Association. She was a member, served as president and as treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Vermont College Alumni Association, Inc., was a longtime volunteer at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, and an active gardener throughout her lifetime.

Ms. Reid is survived by her extended family, Karen L. Brown of Branford, CT, and her three sons, Jayson T. Brown, of Mystic, CT, Eric G. Brown of Clinton, CT, and Kevin A. Brown of Portsmouth, NH. Her extended family also included Lucinda Garthwaite of Plainfield, VT, Lynn Olsen of Pawling, NY, Laurie Butler of Annandale, NJ, Sandra Benson of Big Bear Lake, CA, Robert Garthwaite of Ocean City, NJ, and Jonathan Garthwaite of Canaan, NH.

A private burial will be held in Hartford, CT. Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT assisted with arrangements.
