Shirley P. Husband

Windsor, VT - On Monday, May 25th, 2026, Shirley P. Husband, 89, passed away at home in Windsor, Vermont. Shirley was the third child born to parents Anna “Cordorette” Wentzell and Aubrey Wentzell on May 7th,1937 in Claremont, NH. She graduated from Towle High School in Newport, New Hampshire.

Shirley was a very good athlete in high school playing both basketball and softball. She excelled as a pitcher on the high school softball team and was later offered the opportunity to play for the NGBL “National Girls Baseball League” (The Bloomer Girls) but decided not to move away from her hometown. She often told stories about competing in sports against Gloria Husband (playing for Windsor). Gloria would marry William “Bill” Tansey and would later become Shirley’s sister-in-law and one of her closest friends.

After Shirley graduated from Towle she went to work for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Windsor Vermont, where she would meet the love of her life (for 68 years) Roland Husband “Rollie”. They lived in Newport, NH for a short time, then moved to Windsor, Vermont where she would live with Roland for the remainder of their lives. Shirley won the Goodyear Spirit Award for her hard work and dedication to helping her community thrive. She was a dedicated and conscientious employee and was given a financial award for developing a process for eliminating waste at the company.

She was both a Cub Scout and Webelos Den Leader. She coached the Dodger’s Minor League team in the Windsor Little League, where her team won a championship. Shirley served as the Treasurer and also served on the board of the Windsor Little League. Shirley, Rollie, and a group of close friends were the original organizers of the Windsor Booster Club. Shirley and Rollie enjoyed attending sporting events in Windsor and especially enjoyed watching games involving their sons, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Shirley was an excellent candlepin bowler and joined several bowling leagues at Dick’s Candlepin Lanes, where she won several team and individual championships. She loved to play bingo with her mother and would continue to play bingo with her friends throughout her life. She was an active member of the American Legion. Shirley and Rollie enjoyed playing golf and were members of the John P. Larkin Country Club in Windsor, Vermont. She got a “hole in one”, and on another occasion won the Club Championship. Shirley and Rollie and their friends traveled across the country on numerous golfing and skiing trips. Shirley loved to dance with Rollie and they were known to light up the dance floor.

Shirley, Rollie, and their sons enjoyed several Memorial Day and 4th of July weekends at her in-law’s camp on Lake Shore Drive on Lake Champlain, near the Missisquoi Bay Bridge connecting Swanton, Vermont and Alburgh, New York. Shirley, Rollie, and their sons would drive to Newport, New Hampshire to join the rest of the Wentzell family for numerous Thanksgiving meals, a family tradition dating back to the large Thanksgiving meals hosted by their late Mom.

Shirley, Rollie, and their sons would vacation every summer at the Hermit Island Campground near Bath, Maine. Sherm and Vivian Carter, and their children would also join them on the annual trip to Hermit Island. Her children and grandchildren continue to vacation at Hermit Island. Later in life, Shirley and Rollie would spend their Maine vacation, with their eldest son’s family, at oceanfront homes at the point of Popham Beach as well as the Georgetown point. Her other sons would travel from Hermit Island to visit them while they were in Maine.

More than anything Shirley loved to spend time with Rollie, her sons and their families. She would always seek opportunities to host holiday meals and cook-outs for the family. Shirley especially loved to host Christmas for the family. Her family meant everything to her.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Roland and two siblings, Beverly Wentzell Gentes and Robert Wentzell.
