SHIRLEY LITTLE HAZELWOOD
Shirley Little Hazelwood, 91, passed away on March 5,2015 at Cedar Hill Nursing Home Windsor, VT.
Shirley L. Hazelwood was born on October 12, 1923 in Hinsdale, IL to Jessie Fulton Little and John Shirley Little. She grew up in Westfield, NJ, and graduated Smith College in 1945 where she earned a BA degree in Chemistry.
After graduation she worked at Polaroid in Boston, MA, where she was part of the research team which developed the Land Camera.
Shirley loved nature, especially hiking in the woods to identify wildflowers. She was a gardener and an enthusiastic bird watcher. Concerns about our environment played a large part in her life, which led to her documenting the seasonal count of loons on Lake Damariscotta for the Maine Audubon Society for a period of over ten years. She kept active, swimming, waterskiing, snow skiing and cross country skiing well into her seventies. She was also an avid reader, bridge player and a creative artist. She volunteered in every community in which she lived, and served on the board of Easter Seals while in Chappaqua, NY and Happiness House, a project for the handicapped in Sarasota, Florida.
When asked, Shirley recalled her most memorable times were summers spent on Lake Damariscotta in Maine, first as a child and later as an adult, entertaining family and friends.
She is predeceased by her late husband Robert Chase Hazelwood; a brother, John Jewitt Little; previous husband, Lester Garvin; and former husband, Laureston C. Dobbrow.
Survivors include three daughters: Diana Collins of Springfield, VT; Judith Stoodley of Unity, Maine; and Alice Hebert of Lebanon, NH, as well as two sons: Lawrence Garvin of New York City and Suchitoto, El Salvador; and John Garvin of Cheshire, CT, plus eleven grandchildren and eight great grand children.
A private service will be held at Cedar Hill Nursing Home.
