Shirley Elizabeth was born to Robert Walker and Helene (Emery) Reynolds at their home in White River Jct, VT. She attended Hartford schools, graduating from Hartford High in 1948. Her first jobs were at Newberry's and Corner Drug, then she was a telephone operator at New England Telephone for many years. She became a Catholic at St. Anthony's Church in White River Jct, and was active in Catholic Daughters while a homemaker. Shirley was married to Mark Coutermarsh from 1949 to 1986. In 1951 they became co-owners of Coutermarsh Brothers General Store in North Hartland with Robert & Edna Coutermarsh. They built a home across the road from the store, where they raised two daughters, Deborah (1950) & Darlene (1957). As a page operator in the Communications Department of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital from 1972 until retiring in 1993, she was the "Voice of Hitchcock" that people still remember to this day. Not enjoying retirement, she went to work at Valcom in White River Jct. until retiring in 2012 at 82 years old. Shirley had her own style, which usually included purple, with outfits color coordinated from head to toe. She had long polished nails long before it was in style, and she never paid for a fake nail! Summers she would lie in the sun covered in a mixture of baby oil and iodine for a dark tan. Hating to wear shoes, she went to the clothesline barefoot all winter. She loved to relax near water with friends, from sunny days at Silver Lake or Lake Sunapee, to weekends in Maine or Lake George, NY. Shopping and eating out in search of the perfect Reuben sandwich were favorite rainy day pursuits. Her last few years included her longtime dream visit to Nashville, TN, another to Washington DC, and a few months living in Virginia with Darlene. Sadly, it also included Polycythemia Vera, which gradually weakened her body, frustrated her independent spirit, and led to many health problems. She chose to go back to living alone in her White River Jct. home, which was enabled by many relatives and friends listed below. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in Virginia, giving us the assurance that she is at peace in Heaven now. Shirley is survived by her sister, Charlotte H. Reynolds of Windsor, VT; daughter, Deborah Adams (Wayne) of Enfield, NH; and daughter, Darlene Levy of Rollinsford, NH. She loved her 5 grandchildren: Jody Adams Brenner (Kurt) of Arlington, MA; Kristen Adams Walsh (John) of Andover, MA; Morgan Levy of Nashville, TN; Austin Levy of Rollinsford, NH; & Cameron Reid Levy of Newport News, VA. The crowning jewels of joy in her final years were 2 great granddaughters who called her "Purple Mimi"; Alyssa Mae Walsh of Andover, MA and Paige Elise Brenner of Arlington, MA. She left behind many special friends, Paula Jewell of East Corinth, VT; Lou Dunley of Springfield, MA; Jan Merritt of Williamsburg, VA; niece, Bonnie Coutermarsh Downs of White River Jct, VT; and her beloved Siamese cat Pingtu. Lifetime friend Helga Alexander of North Hartland, VT predeceased her 3 years ago to the day…. We think they are together now, catching up on lost time! Special thanks to Alice Peck Day Hospital for the loving care shown to Shirley and her family… Everyone from the nursing department to the kitchen staff made the last five weeks of her life more bearable. May you always think of Shirley when you wear purple scrubs! Services will be private.
