Windsor, VT – Shirley O. Bates, 93, died Sunday August 4, 2019 at the Historic Homes of Runnemede Evarts House in Windsor.

She was born March 29, 1926 in Woonsocket, RI a daughter of Michael and Mabel (Fosburgh) O'Neill.  Shirley moved with her family to Vermont as a child and she graduated from Windsor High School Class of 1944.  After school she began working in the accounting office at Cone Automatic in what was to be an over forty year career with the company.   She was married to Urban H. Bates June 15, 1947 in Windsor where they lived the rest of their lives.  When the couple began a family in 1949 Shirley took several years off from work to spend with their daughter, returning to Cones in 1954, serving the company until her retirement in 1991.  Shirley has been a resident at Evarts house for the past four years and her family is grateful for the wonderful care she received from both the staff at Historic Homes of Runnemede and Bayada Hospice.

In her younger years she enjoyed skiing at Mt. Ascutney each winter and the family spent summer vacations in York Beach, ME.  Shirley also enjoyed golfing as a member of the John P. Larkin Country Club in Windsor.  She was a lifelong member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and a past member of the Mt. Ascutney Hospital Auxiliary.

She was predeceased by her husband, Urban, in 2005, as well as her father Michael O'Neill, mother Mabel Nadeau and brother Richard O'Neill.

She leaves a daughter Karen Terry and her husband Dr. Thomas Terry of White River Jct., VT; grandsons Justin Terry of Woonsocket, RI and Nicholas Terry and his wife Erin of Smithfield, RI as well as two nieces and two nephews.

A visitation will be held Monday August 12 ^th from 5-6PM at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday August 13 ^th at 11AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor with burial following in the St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery also in Windsor.
