Wilder, VT – Sara Condie, 92, died Monday August 18, 2014 at Valley Terrace Assisted Living in Wilder, VT.
Sara was born January 22, 1922 in Hudson, OH a daughter of Eugene and Stella (Burdick) Rideout, and the youngest of 7 children. After graduating from Hudson High School, Sara was selected to be an acting intern at the prestigious Cleveland Playhouse. She subsequently attended Northwestern University in Chicago, and later moved to San Francisco, where she worked in radio and advertising. She spent the remainder of her working life in and around Palo Alto, CA, first as an assistant at the Center for Advanced Studies at Stanford University, and then in real estate, working her way up to Real Estate Broker and eventually working for herself. She spent many very busy years, determined to complete her education while raising 2 children. She succeeded, earning her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from San Jose State University at the age of 50. Sara was a hard worker; in addition to her successful career as a real estate broker, she also enjoyed teaching business courses at West Valley Community College. She moved to the Upper Valley in 2004 to be nearer to her daughter and her family.
Sara had a passion for houses, and spent much time working in and around her own. She was a "do-it-yourselfer", and a true frugal Yankee who saw usefulness in every object. She was a product of the Great Depression and of World War II, and was molded by both experiences. She knew how to have fun, and loved a good joke. She very much enjoyed being in the outdoors, especially gardening and walking her dogs. She learned to downhill ski in her late 20s, and passed this passion down to her children. She was an owner of one of the early houses built in Squaw Valley, CA, and was happiest there, among family and friends, skiing actively until the age of 75.
The family is grateful for the staff and residents of Valley Terrace, who helped create a wonderful final chapter to her incredible life. You all are her family, and Valley Terrace was her home. She experienced love, joy, laughter and purpose during the 10 years she lived there. The Zegans and Condie families thank you all.
She had six siblings: Eugene, Harold, Ronald, Sammy and Lester Rideout, and Adelaide Rideout Johnson.
Sara's immediate family includes her daughter Claudia Zegans of Hanover, NH and her son Chris Condie of Monument, CO, as well as six grandchildren. She also has four nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 24th at 2:00 pm at Valley Terrace in Wilder. Bring a good joke if you have one. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Markillie Cemetery in Hudson, OH.
