Obituary

Ascutney, VT-- Sandra A. Smith, 79, a former resident of Ascutney, VT, died peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2024, in Zephyrhills, FL. She was born on July 20, 1944, in Lebanon, NH to Robert and Addie (Lapan) Aldrich and grew up in Wilder, VT. She was a gifted athlete at Hartford High School, where she met her high school sweetheart, Howard Smith. They married nearly 60 years ago on March 14, 1964. The two enjoyed escaping to Florida for the winter months, always returning just in time for Sandy to volunteer at the Old South Church's Spring Rummage Sale; Sandy never missed an opportunity to volunteer in her community!

While Sandy had many jobs and talents throughout her years, her most important role was as a mother, foster mother, and wife. She lovingly took care of her household, children, and many foster children through the years. Even in the late stages of Alzheimer's, she enjoyed reminiscing about days spent with children (and their families). She was an active member of the Old South Church and the Order of the Eastern Star in Windsor, VT.

Sandy enjoyed playing golf, bowling, dancing (especially clogging), dogs and cats, preparing meals, volunteering, spending time with family and friends, and was a talented quilter.

She is survived by her husband, Howard Smith of Zephyrhills; two sons, John Smith and wife, Michelle, and Joe Smith and girlfriend, Barbara Whalen; grandchildren, Jake and Emily Smith, Kylie and Zackary Bourque, Porter and George Whalen; great-grandchild, Eleanor Mooney, and many other close relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Julie, and two brothers, Ronald and Donald Aldrich.

Sandy found joy in the simplest of things and saw the good in everyone. Quick to give, and reluctant to receive, she was the definition of selfless. To honor her, her family requests that you make time to help a neighbor, stranger, friend, or family member. Sing to children, dance to music, and enjoy the simplicities of everyday life.

Services will be held at Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT on Friday, May 17, 2024, with a visitation starting at 10am, until the time of service at 12pm. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Rest Cemetery in Thetford, VT, and will conclude with a reception at the Thetford Community Building.

Additionally, there will be a memorial for Sandy during the Old South Church Sunday worship service starting at 10 am on May 19th, with a reception to follow.
