Ruth Milchman Chodak

White River Jct., VT – Ruth Milchman Chodak, 86, died Thursday January 22nd at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

She was born April 19, 1928 in New York, NY a daughter of Harry and Ida (Yanofsky) Agulnick. Ruth grew up and attended school in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Growing up in the Depression, life was materially poor but very rich with many cousins and the simple pleasures of extended family life. She was married to Norman Rich for a time before his death at a young age. She later married Abraham (Albert) Milchman. They resided in the Bronx where they raised their daughter and spent twenty six years together. After Mr. Milchman's death, Ruth married Bernie Chodak. They lived in Brooklyn until 1993 when they moved to the Upper Valley area to be nearer to her daughter. Mr. Chodak died in 2010 after twenty six years of marriage. Bernie and Ruth were always together and were known to many in the Upper Valley for their devotion to each other and their attendance at many Upper Valley cultural events.

Ruth was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Upper Valley. A life-long sufferer of anxiety, the peer-support organization Recovery International was also a very important part of her life, and she credited this with her mental health. Until her death, Ruth remained interested and engaged in the world as she continued to explore various spiritualities. She was proud of her family and will be remembered as a very devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Milchman of Chelsea; two grandchildren Galen and Fiona Milchman; a sister Rose Schaeffer of Brooklyn and two nieces.

A time of visitation will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. from 2-3PM on Monday January 26th with a funeral service following at the funeral home at 3PM. Committal services will be held in the Hartford Cemetery in the spring.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Recovery International 105 W. Adams St., Ste. 2940, Chicago, IL 60603 or to a local mental health organization of your choice.
