Obituary

Lempster, NH - Roderick A. Raubeson, 82, died Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, VT.

He was born March 2, 1942, in New Haven, CT where he grew up and attended school. Rod entered the US Marine Corps after graduating from high school and served in the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. He worked various jobs after his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, including as a firefighter in New Haven. He later moved to Greenfield, MA where he attended Greenfield Community College and began parachuting in Turners Falls and Orange, MA. Rod made over one hundred jumps and worked as a chute rigger for a time. After meeting and falling in love with Lorraine Flye, a student at UMass Amherst, he began working toward his bachelor's degree at the university. They were married in 1975 and settled in New Salem where they raised their daughter and lived until moving to Lempster in recent years. Rod was director of Veterans Services for the Town of Amherst for many years and was proud of the work he did there, including mentoring work study students. He also honored veterans and their families sewing Blue Star and Gold Star Banners, which was featured on ABC news On the Road with Charles Kuralt.

Rod is survived by his wife, Lorraine, of Lempster, NH and daughter, Merryl Pauly and her husband Mitchell of Grantham, NH, as well as his grandchildren, Bode and Holden Pauly.

A private interment in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA, will take place at the convenience of the family.
