He graduated from Hartford High School 1943 and enlisted in the Army, where he served in the infantry as part of Patton's Third Army in France and Germany at the end of World War II. He was very proud of his service. After being discharged from the military, he attended Albany Business College and worked in the business office at the White River Veteran's Hospital. He is most fondly remembered for his 33 years of service to the Town of Hartford, where he served as Town Treasurer from 1957 to 1990. In this role he knew everyone's name and always had a story to tell about the children of Hartford and the families that raised them.
A lifelong member of the American Legion, he coached the Legion baseball team in the 1950s and led the team to at least one state championship. He was active in St Anthony's Church in White River Junction. He and his wife traveled throughout the northeastern United States and Canada with the Twin State Squares to participate in square and round dancing conventions.
He enjoyed watching all sports at the Hartford High School playing fields next to the home he built and lived in for 55 years, and he was a true fan of all Boston teams. He enjoyed vacationing at York Beach, Maine, first as a child with his parents and later with his own family. He loved and was especially proud of his 4 grandsons and all their adventures.
He spent the last three years of his life in the Kendal community in Hanover and was cared for with compassion and love by staff members and residents alike. He died peacefully after a brief period of declining health, surrounded by family and caring staff.
He is survived by his daughter, Gail Simonds and her husband Steven Bos of Kittery Point, Maine; daughter Paula Newton of Manchester, N.H.; daughter Susan Nugent and her husband Bill of Meriden; son Gregory Simonds and his wife, Jeri Baker, of Old Lyme, CT; and grandsons Aaron and Alexander Bos, Ross S. Wood and Robert Bryden Nugent.
