Robert J. McCoy

Wilder, VT – Robert J. McCoy, 80, died Friday January 6th at home with his loving wife of over thirty years, Keum Yie "Peggy" McCoy.

He was born October 13, 1931 in Barton, VT a son of Raymond and Katherine (Gravel) McCoy. Bob attended school at various schools in the Northeast Kingdom and at young age hitchhiked to White River Jct., VT where he worked at several places including as a bellboy at the Hotel Coolidge. He enlisted in the US Army at age 17 to serve in the Korean War. He was wounded while in Korea and received a Purple Heart as well as a Bronze Service Star. After his discharge Bob worked at the Ward Baking Company's Tip Top Bakery in White River Jct. for twenty three years, retiring in 1980. While at the bakery he began purchasing rental properties and at one time owned over 140 units.

Bob was a member of the Hartford Elks Lodge 1541, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 2571 and the American Legion Post 26 all in White River Jct. He enjoyed stopping by to sign the book at the club each day and have a glass of orange juice.

He had a special love for animals especially his Norwegian Elkhound Prince. He also enjoyed the bears and trains at Clark's Trading Post in Lincoln, NH but his favorite pastime was playing poker.

He was predeceased by a daughter Vicki Backus, a granddaughter Mandy Sue McCoy, a sister Joyce Voghell and two brothers Walter Parmenter and Kenneth McCoy.

He leaves five daughters, Susie McCoy Hall of Parker, CO, Gail McCoy of Hartford, VT, Janice McCoy Taylor of Jaffrey, NH, Phyllis McCoy Jacien of Castleton, VT and Michele S. Basham of Poultney, VT; eleven grandchildren Kenneth and Justin Backus, Nathaniel, Adrian and Nicholas Luce, Tanya Domingue, Makaylah Jacien, Matthew and Phillip Hamm and Hunter and Hayden Hall; several great-grandchildren; three sisters Mary Jane Bickford of Glover, VT, Judy Ford of Alpharetta, GA and Phyllis Messner of Maryville, TN; five brothers Ronald McCoy of Henderson, NC, Raymond McCoy of West Burke, VT, Alan McCoy of Wilder, VT Lawrence Parmenter of South Royalton, VT and James Parmenter of Wilder as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. Friday from 2-4PM and 6-8PM. A memorial service will be held at the Charles Wilder Center in Wilder on Saturday at 1PM. Burial with military honors will take place in the Vermont Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center in the Spring.
