Robert L. Bacon

EAST THETFORD, VERMONT

Robert L. Bacon, 89, passed away on November 8, 2010 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, VT.

He was born February 12, 1921 to William and Kate (Goulette) Bacon in the gray stone house in Thetford, as were his eight siblings. After graduating from Thetford Academy in 1939 he attended Sycamore University. Before beginning his senior year in 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. In March of 1943 he was called into service but graduated from college in May with a BA degree.

In the Army he was an instructor in Bombsight Maintenance at Lowry Field in Denver, Colorado until 1945 when he was sent overseas' seeing service in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He was released from service in March of 1946. Mr Bacon started his career as a teacher at Thetford Academy in 1946, where he remained for forty years. He was active with the Alumni Association, assisted with the Basic Adult Education, taught Drivers Education for several summers for Miller Auto and tutored in math. He was very proud of work on cemeteries as they were used as the Bicentennial project for the town. He also did work on other cemeteries. He also encouraged his family to compile a cookbook. In 1975 his mother with whom he was still living with in the old stone house passed away. In 1976 Mr Bacon made a house for a student and a friend whose caretaker passed away and who needed help. His name is Harold Gould. They lived and worked together for more than thirty years. Mr. Bacon enjoyed family history and was an avid genealogist

Mr Bacon is predeceased by: two sisters, Annie Godfrey and Carrie Robinson; and five brothers, Charles bacon, George Bacon, Ralph Bacon, Loren Bacon and Arthur Bacon.

He is survived by: a brother Warren Bacon of Wilder, VT; his friend Harold Gould of East Thetford; nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 1PM at the Evergreen Rest Cemetery in Thetford Center, VT. Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction has been entrusted with arrangements.
