Robert M. Dixon 1933-2022
"Thank you for everything"; my brother's last words to our father. Everything! Nothing much more to say; not hyperbole in this case. Our family was never in want of anything we needed, we never felt cheated. Between adventures from China to Peru, the Himalayas to Yemen, Maine to Hawaii, and travels on Route 66 Bob found time for his life-long passion for teaching, service, volunteering, and most importantly his family. His childhood on a Methodist mission in China instilled a curiosity about, and respect for, people from other cultures and started a journey of service to others. His time at Mount Hermon preparatory school reinforced these ideals and strengthened a staunch work ethic. Mount Hermon was also the beginning of an impressive athletic career that included distance running, gymnastics, fencing, rock climbing, and triathlons. A stint in the army at the end of the Korean conflict provided more travel and multi-cultural experiences and the means to attend Springfield College. A doctorate of education from the University of Massachusetts set into motion a long and productive teaching career at Stockton State College in Pomona, New Jersey. In a "second career" at Atlantic Prevention Resources Bob taught lessons about self-esteem, avoiding risky and addictive behaviors, and encouraging healthy lifestyles for at-risk members of the community. Bob was extremely proud of these efforts and of his swan song as a volunteer docent at the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont and a great grandfather. However, his greatest achievement was his dedication to Grace, his wife of almost 50 years. His tireless and stellar efforts during her terminal illness provided inspiration and a true model of devotion. Similarly, financial stability, guidance, a strong role-model, determination, resiliency, and a sense of confidence and accomplishment were passed on to all in our family. Doubtless that all who knew Bob understood that he was a venerable man.
