Obituary

Plainfield, NH

Richard W. Plummer, 78, a resident of Plainfield, died Monday, September 20th after a brief illness. He loved spending time with his family and spent his last day surrounded by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was born on May 20, 1932 in Windsor, VT, a son of Stephen and Doris Plummer. He attended Kimball Union Academy in Plainfield, NH and Dartmouth College. In May of 1958, he married Gloria Barber of Reading, VT and was happily married for 52 years.

After graduating from Dartmouth, Richard reported to the Marines at Quantico, VA. He was commissioned and left for duty with the Third Marine Air Wing in Oppoma, Japan. He tried out and made the Wing Rifle team where he was awarded many medals and honors including distinguished ranking, a gold medal at the National Matches and a gold at the Hawaii Nationals. Following the 1957 Nationals he was released from active duty and returned to the Upper Valley.

In January 1958, Richard accepted a position at Dartmouth College as Assistant to the Business Manager. Richard later became Purchasing Agent at Dartmouth and then Director of Buildings and Grounds where he worked successfully for twenty five years. He retired in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, and his four children: Douglas Plummer and his wife Susan of Wilder, VT and their children Nathan and Sean Plummer and Chris, Jon and Matt Hamilton; Bruce Plummer and his wife Susan of Plainfield, NH and their children Abby and Alex; Annette Moore and her husband Jeffrey of Plainfield, NH and their children Julia and Nicolle; and Sheila Beaulieu and her husband Christopher of Mason, NH.

One of Richard's greatest joys was having all his children and grandchildren close by and he was always ready to gather the family for cookouts, parties and other celebrations. Richard loved to spend time at the Dartmouth College Grant and later in life spent as much time as possible at his camp in northern NH. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and relaxing there with his family and friends.

A funeral will be held on Friday, September 24, at 2:00 p.m. at the Plainfield Community Church in Plainfield, NH, with the Rev. Suellen Leugers, Pastor, officiating. A graveside burial will follow in the Plainfield Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Blow-Me-Down Grange in Plainfield.
