Obituary

Windsor, Vt.—Richard Kenneth Nadler, 71, of Windsor, Vt., died on Oct. 18 at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care in Lebanon, N.H., after living for more than a year with a rare form of cancer.

Rick was born on Sept. 2, 1952, in Englewood, N.J., a son of Eleanor (Zimmermann) Nadler and Edward Charles Nadler. He graduated in 1971 from Ridgefield Memorial High School, in Ridgefield, N.J., and spent summers at Point Pleasant, on the Jersey Shore. As a high school student, Rick was selected to participate in the New Jersey All-State Chorus. He was an accomplished trumpet player and had a passion for music.

Rick was a certified electronics technician and had worked for the past 12 years as a technical support specialist at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. His work brought him into contact with thousands of faculty and staff members in every division and department. They counted on Rick to teach them how to use their websites and help them fix technical issues, which inevitably cropped up. Rick was always ready to pitch in to solve emergencies large and small and, on one memorable day, he helped fix the pump on a fish tank.

Prior to his employment at Dartmouth, Rick had worked as a network systems administrator at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor. He had also owned his own company hosting and developing websites and had worked as a professional photographer.

Rick appreciated finely tuned bicycles and motorcycles and was skilled at bicycle restoration and repair. He loved being on his bike, whether on his indoor trainer during the winter, or on the roads of Vermont and New Hampshire during warmer months. Rick rode solo and with friends and coworkers, including in 2019 when, as part of a team of Dartmouth coworkers, he completed the Prouty Century Ride cycling 100 miles in the annual fundraiser for the Dartmouth Cancer Center.

Fitness was important to Rick. Shortly after he received a transplant, he would walk five miles, including up and down 10 flights of stairs, a practice he called the "five-and-dime," echoing the name of the popular route cyclists in the Upper Connecticut River Valley travel on Route 5 in Vermont and Route 10 in New Hampshire. Rick's positive attitude led nurses to ask him to work with other patients on their recovery.

Rick was predeceased by his mother, who died in May at age 100, and his father, who died in 1977.

Survivors include two sisters, Susan Suessmann of Riverdale, N.J., and Pamela Cordts of Frankford Township, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Oct. 28 at Brownsville Cemetery, in the village of Brownsville in West Windsor, Vt., with a celebration of life immediately following.
