Tunbridge, VT – Richard E. Moses, 68, died Wednesday afternoon, July 29 at the Veterans Administration Hospital after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born June 15, 1947 in Strafford, VT the son of Gardner M. and Jessie Edna (Perkins) Moses. He attended school in Strafford and went to work for Paul Russell farming at a very early age. In his early teens he moved to Massachusetts with his sister and brother-in-law. Because Rich looked much older than he actually was he got a job at a Pallet Factory where he worked until he returned to Tunbridge shortly after his sixteenth birthday. He worked at a saw mill in South Royalton until he was drafted in the army in 1966. Just before he left for the service he married Janice Compton in Tunbridge, VT, July 30, 1966. Rich served until 1968 and then returned to Tunbridge. He built their home on Kibling Hill in 1969. Rich worked for S.T. Griswold Company while they were building interstate. He primarily worked on the sections from White River Jct to Sharon, VT in interstate 89 and then White River to Norwich, VT on 91. He later found employment as a carpenter at Huntington Farm in Strafford where he worked for over eighteen years. In 1986 bought a backhoe and started an excavation business R.E. Moses Backhoe Services. He grew his business over the next two decades. He was a very hard worker.
Richard enjoyed camping, jeeping and taking trips to Old Orchard Beach. He loved country music and going to the Hill Blue Grass Festivals. He was a past member of the American Legion in White River Jct.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Shirley Paige.
Rich is survived by his former wife, Janice Moses of Tunbridge, daughter, Julie Anne Benjamin of South Strafford, VT, two sons, Richard Moses Jr. of Tunbridge, VT, James Gardner of Strafford, VT, eight grandchildren, on great grandchild, a brother Gardner "Sonny" Moses Jr. of Tunbridge, VT, two sisters, Ruby Shute of Groton, VT and Penny Russell of Tunbridge as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, August 30, at 1PM at the Tunbridge Fair Grounds in Tunbridge, VT.
