Long time Norwich resident, Richard E. ("June") Thompson Jr. died peacefully at his home Sunday from complications relating to cancer; he was 86. Born on August 5, 1924 in Woodstock, VT to Richard E. Thompson Sr. and Mary Helen (Spaulding) Thompson, June spent his childhood in Woodstock and Bridgewater, where he attended Woodstock High School and developed a passion for racing cars. During World War II, he served as a mechanic in the US Army Air Corps working on B-17 and B-29 bombers. In 1943 he married Alice Houghton, settled in Bridgewater and then Woodstock, and served for several years with the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Department.
After the death of his first wife, June married Barbara (Jamieson) Thompson, moved to Norwich, VT in 1966, and continued to work as a self-employed logger, trucker, and heavy equipment operator. In addition to hauling ski-lifts for Poma, plowing roads for the Town of Norwich, and working on road crews for the State of Vermont (which included construction of I-89 and I-91), he also built and ran his own sawmill. A rugged Yankee individualist and a man who loved the outdoors, June continued, until last year, logging and pursuing his other interests of snowmobiles, motorcycles, old trucks, railroads, and restoring his 1954 FWD fire truck, previously owned by the Town of Woodstock.
In addition to his first wife, Thompson was predeceased by his parents, his stepmother Helen (Kurasch) Thompson and his son Richard S. Thompson of Woodstock.
He is survived by his wife Barbara and three children, Darrell Thompson of Norwich, Jay Thompson of Grantham, NH and Mary Thompson of Harrisonburg, VA, his daughter-in-law Linda Thompson of Woodstock, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren, his half-brother Robert Thompson and his half-sister Cynthia Jaycox.
A memorial service is planned for this May and his cremated remains will be scattered around his beloved 100 acre woodlot, the Fort property in Norwich, later this summer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire PO Box 976 White River Jct., VT 05001.
