Obituary

White River Junction, Vermont-

Ralph E. Coutermarsh, 87, died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Lebanon Center - Genesis Healthcare in Lebanon, NH.

Ralph was born March 18, 1925 in Hanover, NH, the son of Albert and Leila (Sleeper) Coutermarsh. He lost both parents by the age of eight and was adopted by his neighbor Orpha Austin. She was an adoring mother and he was devoted to her as well. Ralph attended Hartford High School and enlisted in the Navy in 1944 where he served in the Pacific Theater during WWII on the destroyer Hale where he was in charge of the torpedos and depth charges. Upon his return he married the love of his life, Mary Alice Beauchene April 20, 1946 in White River Junction. Ralph went to work at the Hartford Woolen Mill and spent a short time with the Boston Maine Railroad. He went to work for Tip Top Bakery and then Nissen Bakery as a salesman driver retiring in 1984.

Ralph enjoyed traveling between Vermont and Florida where he spent his summers for 23 years. He enjoyed hunting, surf fishing, swimming, shuffleboard, dancing, and calling Bingo for 21 years while in Florida. Ralph was a life member of the Harford Elks BPOE# 1541, a member of the American Legion Post #26 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #257 all in White River Junction.

Ralph is predeceased by his wife Mary Coutermarsh and a brother Maurice Coutermarsh.

He is survived by a son Thomas Coutermarsh and his wife Lynn of White River Junction; a daughter Judith Heugel and her husband Ralph of Fort Pierce, Fl, 4 grandchildren Shane Coutermarsh of Arizona, Shannon Flynn of Wilder, VT, Jim Monday of Oklahoma, and Pamela Monday of Arkansas; 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. He also leaves behind his dear friend Perley Woodward of White River Junction.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the nursing and support staff at Genesis for their exceptional kindness to Dad and the family.

Visiting hours will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction Monday, June 11th from 4-6 followed by a memorial service at the funeral home at 6 PM.
