IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Phyllis Macy
Shambo
July 18, 1937 – September 30, 2019
White River Jct., VT- Phyllis Macy Shambo, 82 passed peacefully on a beautiful fall evening on September 30, 2019 surrounded by her loving family and friends. A non-smoker her whole life, she fought a courageous 8 year battle with Stage IV lung cancer right up until the very end.
She was born on July 18, 1937 at the family farm on Turkey Hill in Northfield, Vermont. Phyllis was one of 7 children born to Ernest J. and Lila (Hall) Macy. She graduated from Northfield High School in 1955 as class salutatorian. She was accepted to Johnson State College to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher, but due to her father's illness she was needed at home and unable to attend. Phyllis married William Shambo on August 18, 1957 in Northfield, Vermont. Shortly after, they purchased a home in Wilder, Vermont where they lived and raised their family for many years. In 1989, they purchased their forever home on Jericho Street in Hartford, Vermont where she enjoyed the quiet country setting and all the wildlife it had to offer.
After 30 years of dedicated service at the VA Federal Employees Credit Union she retired in 1996 as the manager. She also served as the company bookkeeper for the family business, Kibby Equipment in White River Jct., Vermont until the business closed in 2018.
She was an active member of the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ where she served in several capacities over the years, including Treasurer and Auditor, also a member of the Hartford Historical Society and past member of the Wilder Womens Club and Wilder PTA. When she wasn't working or taking care of others, Phyllis enjoyed playing cards and doing puzzles. She was known for her homemade pickles and mincemeat which she so generously shared with loved ones and friends. She had a pure heart, loving nature and always had a kind word for anyone. There weren't many days that one wouldn't see Phyllis not wearing one of her beautiful sweaters that she loved as she was always cold. Phyllis will be remembered for her sense of style, "Beautiful" perfume and infectious smile.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Colby Shambo, as well as three sisters, Euna Macy, Bernice Kimball and Doris Roberts and a brother, Arnold Macy. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 62 years, Bill of White River Jct.; her children Sue Ellen Shambo and Bill Shambo, Jr both of Wilder, Vt; a grandson Ryan Gunzinger and his partner Jaimie Gagnon of Turner, ME; great grandchildren Daigan and Daphne Gunzinger and Gabbie Reynolds; sisters Ruth Jones of Carlisle, PA and Elizabeth "Betty" Kolinich of Essex Jct., VT as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr Konstantin Dragnev and the Oncology team at DHMC for the care they provided her over the years. Also, a special thank you for the exceptional care both she and the family received during her final days in the Hospice suite at Mt Ascutney Hospital in Windsor, Vermont.
