IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter
Moeschen
April 7, 1936 – October 25, 2023
Peter Michael Moeschen, 87, died peacefully early Wednesday morning, October 25, 2023, at The Village in White River Jct., VT. Peter was born April 7, 1936, in New York City, NY, the oldest son of Francis Burke and Helen D. (Carney) Moeschen. He grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. As a young boy served as an altar boy at St. Ignatius Loyola Church and attended St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic School. His parents purchased and began operating Camp Mascoma for Boys on Crystal Lake in Enfield, NH in 1933. From camper to camp counselor, Peter spent his summers in New Hampshire and school years in New York City. Peter was a gifted and natural athlete. He excelled in all sports in which he took part. His college years were first at St. Bonaventure and then later graduating from Adelphi University on Long Island, he received countless honors for his contributions to the athletics teams. Although he was a standout on all his teams, Peter was especially skilled at lacrosse. After receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in education from Adelphi University in Garden City, NY, Peter took a position as an Elementary School Physical Education Teacher with schools in the Lindenhurst, Long Island School district. He married his high school sweetheart, Marie Prendergast, on June 15, 1958, at the New York Athletic Club and they made their home in Long Beach, New York. Peter taught for over thirty-one years and retired at 57 years old.
Retirement did not, however, mean sitting around, Peter and Marie traveled across the United States visiting every state in the union. They continued to summer at the camp on Crystal Lake. Peter served as a swimming official on Long Island at different high schools while he was a teacher and well into retirement years. He also filled his time fixing and maintaining the two properties and became a real "Mr. Fix-it".
His daughters describe him as "steady, straight forward, generous, and a caring husband, father, and friend". He was one in a million.
Peter was predeceased by his wife, Marie, who died February 13, 2015, as well as his younger brother, Timothy Moeschen. He is survived by a son, John Moeschen of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughters, Audrey Moeschen of Long Beach, NY, and Diane King of Lebanon, NH; grandchildren, Peter, Kathleen, Kyle, and Jaclyn. He also had a loyal poodle named Murphy.
A "Celebration of Life" will be held at a later date. Condolences to his family may be left at an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com
