Obituary

Windsor, VT
Pearl L. Whitcomb, 86, a longtime resident of Windsor, died at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility in Windsor, VT on Friday, July 13, 2012 after a long period of declining health.

She was born January 25, 1926 in Island Pond, VT the eldest daughter of Alba and Laura (John) Scott.

Pearl attended schools in Island Pond. During WWII her family moved to Claremont, NH where she worked at a manufacturing plant producing combat boots for troops overseas. She joked that she and some of her female workmates would place notes to the GI's in the boots. Later she worked at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in Windsor where she met her future husband.

In April of 1948 she married Robert J. Whitcomb in Windsor, VT where they lived for the rest of their lives. After the birth of their three sons and a daughter she became a dedicated loving mother and homemaker. She also cared for many other children and a foster child.

Pearl loved to travel and logged thousands of miles in motor homes with her beloved mother, sisters, brother-in-law and niece. In later years, she spent many happy weeks with her sister in Florida.

She loved her family and always looked forward to the many backyard barbeques, holiday gatherings and special events in all of their lives. She also loved socializing with her many friends and the special "Friday lunches" with Everett and his group of lovely ladies.

Pearl was a longtime active member of the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church and later the Old South Congregational Church and enjoyed volunteering at both churches. She especially enjoyed working at the semi-annual Old South Church rummage sales where both gossip and merchandise were said to be plentiful. She was also an active participant in Volunteers in Action.

She is survived by her three sons, Roger Whitcomb and his wife Linda of Windsor, Ronald Whitcomb and his wife Kathy of Windsor and Jay Whitcomb of Windsor, her sister Islene Quintey of Claremont and her sister Joan Rogers of Lehigh Acres, Florida. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Heidi, Richard, Jamie, Jennifer, Shelby, Shane, Miranda, Robert "Ty", Melanie, Matt and Mike, eight great grandchildren, Ethan, Madison, Kameron, Nick, Britani, Corey, Jay and Maple, several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Bob in 1983 and, tragically, by her daughter and "best friend" Jolene Austin two years ago.

At Pearl's request, there will be no public calling hours. A private burial ceremony arranged by the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor was held on Sunday, July 15 in the Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond, VT. The Rev. Amanda Lape-Freeberg, Pastor of the Old South Congregational Church in Windsor, officiated. A celebration of Pearl's life will be held at the Old South Congregational Church in Windsor at a later date.
