IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Pauline 'Sammy'
Howe
October 14, 1929 – May 23, 2023
Pauline "Sammy" Margaret (Perkins) Howe, 93, passed away on May 23, 2023, surrounded by her children.
Sammy was born in Hartford, VT on October 14, 1929, to Archie and Bertha (Davis) Perkins. She graduated from Lebanon High School, spent several years working at the telephone company and then married Avery Howe in 1951. She and Avery raised five children in their beloved home on Rice Road in Hartland.
She enjoyed traveling and exploring the country with Avery on camping, and sometimes long motorcycle trips. She and Avery gifted their grandchildren a trip to the fair when they turned eight. She loved adventure, but nothing ever compared to her home – always overfilled with laughter and treats for man and dog. In more recent years, as a widow, she was thrilled to travel again with family and see new and interesting things.
Forever sewing, she and Avery had matching square dance outfits for each holiday and any other occasion you can imagine. Every color scheme. While working on her "last" quilt, she would be in the midst of the next one for someone who needed it.
She never forgot a birthday. She could transform common household items into beautiful crafts. Not a local fundraiser went by without one of her beautiful log cabin style quilts on offer. She loved fiercely and hugged hard, whispering, "I love you" in your ear.
Sammy was the greatest, most patient supporter and cheerleader to all she loved. She believed that her children and grandchildren were her greatest achievements. Her humor was intelligent; her timely quips repeated in family stories retold through generations. She made everyone feel safe, warm, and brilliant.
Sammy is predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Avery Howe; infant son, Aaron; parents, Archie and Bertha Perkins; twin sister, Roberta Goodrich and younger sister, Ruth West.
Her gentle spirit is carried on by brothers, Robert Perkins and Richard Perkins; son, Avery Howe, Jr., and his wife, Jane Howe; daughters, Deborah Shields, Dina Savoie, Dawn Bissonnette and her husband, Michael Bissonnette and Dorie Burnham and her husband, Donald; twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., on Thursday evening, June 8, 2023, from 5-7pm. A memorial service will be held on June 9, 2023, at 11:00am at the First Congregational Church of Hartland, with a reception to follow.
