West Hartford, VT – Paul W. Oakes, 58, died Thursday January 21, 2010 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.
He was born April 16, 1951 in Hanover, NH a son of Francis and Nellie (Ramaska) Oakes. He graduated from Hartford High School in 1970. He took over Oakes Salvage from his father and has operated it since.
Paul was a very successful business man and took great pride in any property he owned. He took meticulous care of his lawns, with family and friends asking how many riding lawn mowers he owned. He enjoyed buying, selling and restoring old cars. Paul was an avid pool player and "owned the best" pool table, according to him. He regularly played on Thursday nights with his pool buddies, Dave and Jim. His door was always open to anyone who wanted a game, regardless of their ability to play.
Paul was a very kind and generous man who gave away many parts and vehicles over the years. If he knew someone was down on their luck he was usually quick to offer assistance, including money and sometimes a place to stay. He had many, many friends.
Paul is also survived by Shelby, his beloved cocker spaniel, who went everywhere with him. He made sure she got a ride in the truck every day.
He is predeceased by his parents and a brother David Oakes.
He is survived by his daughter Bethany Duval of White River Jct., his twin sister Pamela Weaver of White River Jct.; three brothers, Francis Oakes of White River Jct., Thomas Oakes of Canaan, NH and Robert Oakes of Lebanon, NH as well as many nieces and nephews. He was also survived by Stacy Leonard, his fiancée and her 4 children; Zack, Karlee, Felicia and her fiancée Ryan, Melinda, her husband Brandon and their daughter Serenitee. Paul had a great fondness for Justin, Tyler and Tanner and spent many happy hours with them.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 1PM with burial following in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
