Reading, Vermont- Paul J. Donnelly Jr., formerly of Oyster Bay, NY, 99, died Tuesday September 24, 2013 at his home surround by family and friends.
He was born February 26, 1914 in Brooklyn, NY the son of Paul and Mary (Grant) Donnelly. He grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from the local schools. Paul went on to complete his undergraduate work at St. Johns University in New York City and obtain his JD from St. John University School of Law in Queens, NY. He was married to Marian Kinsley in February 1943. Paul served his country during WWII as an officer in the US Army and continued to serve in the reserves retiring as a Lt Col. He served as council to the Pennsylvania Railroad and also kept a private practice. He later went to work with the Long Island Railroad where he served as Vice President and General Council. Over the years Paul and his family would summer in their home in Reading and in 2007 they made it their permanent home.
Paul was a devout Catholic and was Commentator at St. Dominic's Church in Oyster Bay, former President of the Emerald Society and a world class tennis player, who played in the US Open while it was in Forrest Hills. He was well known by all at the Woodstock Fitness Center where he would regularly swim. He enjoyed bettering his knowledge of the Railroad and sharing it.
He is predeceased by a son John Donnelly and three sisters Miriam Sullivan, Cathy Peters, Anne Reilly.
He survived by his wife Marian Donnelly; three sons, Paul Donnelly of New Fairfield, CT, James Donnelly of Reading and Palm Beach, FL and Peter Donnelly of London, England, and a daughter Mary Beth Hutchinson of Beaver Dam, VA, 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grand children.
A visitation will be held Sunday, September 29 at from 2-3pm at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT immediately followed by a memorial service next to Kennedy's Pond behind the funeral home.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Dominic's Church in Oyster Bay at a later date.
