Obituary

Rutland, VT – Pamela A. Merritt, formerly of Hartland, VT, is now at peace. She died Monday, November 18, 2024, at the Pines Nursing Facility inn Rutland, VT.  She was born June 2, 1951, in Burlington, VT, the adopted daughter of Henry L. Merritt and Janet Winter (Washburn) Hammond.

Pam gracefully managed her intellectual disability, but sadly this meant institutional care for most of her early life. During her youth she was a resident at the Brandon Training School. Before that institution closed, Pam left the school and moved to help in the kitchen at St. Joseph's Convent in Rutland, VT. Pam remained 40+ years at St. Joseph Kervick Residence through their many transitions, moving to The Pines a year ago after fracturing her hip.

Pam loved to watch NFL football, and each season had a favorite quarterback to root for. She loved watching soap operas, and you must never interrupt her on weekdays from 12:30 to 2PM.

Pammy's nature was to be kind, wanting to be a friend to all and never turned down a chance to visit with anyone who would take the time to stop and talk. Pam had a fondness for gentle animals and was a devoted mother to her own cat, Lady Di.

Pam was predeceased by her parents, her youngest sister Jessica Merritt, and her "favorite" brother-in-law, Mark Coutermarsh. Pamela is survived by her sister, Martha Coutermarsh of North Hartland, VT, cousins, and step-family.

Pam's cremated remains will be buried in the Hartland Village Cemetery in Hartland, VT.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lucy McKenzie Humane Society, P.O. Box 702, Brownsville, VT 05037.

As Pam's sister, I am grateful for the kindness of Pam's many friends and caregivers and in particular wish to thank Bayada Hospice of Rutland for Pam's end-of-life care, the staff at The Pines, Stacy, Diana, and Maureen from Kevrick, and sister Miriam.

Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction has been entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be left for her family at an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com
